Once upon a time among Barrens of Pine,
Boggy cedar rivers ran back then down to
Now round soggy, Southern Jersey Devils,
Rare, reclusive turtles sun freckled spots,
Orange-yellow dots set in a precise grid
Curving organic, hellfire fallen stars from
Heaven, littered wide across midnight sky,
Deeply endangered indigo shells spotted
By a once and future childhood...
Then and once again at 50, old heart relived,
Revived youthful leaps of appreciation since,
Yes, it bore witness once again on this rough,
Coronavirus day very much in dire need some
Nerdy love of nature.
Of course, youthful exuberance coursing
Electric through a rusty old engine caused
A flawless fumble, camera bumbled just in
Time to miss the shot of him tumbling into
Murky safety below the Spring melt, lusty
Wood frogs yawning background for the
Dramatic scene.
